2017 FESTIVAL

Another marvellous Mozartfest

The 27th Bath Mozartfest once again attracted outstanding reviews and packed all the great venues of the city with music lovers from Bath and beyond. Thank you to all our sponsors and society members, and particularly to our audiences who helped make the nine days such a wonderful celebration of Mozart and many other composers.

The Takács Quartet, arguably the world’s finest string quartet, ensured that the sixteen-concert festival began with Mozartian aplomb.

Saturday night in Bath Abbey, and a concert given by David Bates’ La Nuova Musica, one of the most exciting ensembles on the British early music scene, was always going to be a crowd pleaser and predictably attracted a full house. The starry line-up of vocal soloists including Lucy Crowe and Mary Bevan plus the Holst singers, was a real winner, with many present declaring this to be their favourite Mozartfest 2017 experience.

We were also fortunate to enjoy a plethora of pianistic talent this year, from the great Sir András Schiff, who played to a packed and rapt Assembly Room audience, to Bath favourite Imogen Cooper, with piano duos, trios and a quintet in between, plus the fortepiano specialist Kristian Bezuidenhout.

Highlights were too many to mention, but a special plaudit must go to Pavel, Annelien and Eivind, the three outstanding young musicians who give such a delightful and spirited Friday afternoon concert at the Guildhall, as part of a new collaboration between Bath Mozartfest and BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists Scheme.

Those who were unable to get tickets for this concert will be delighted to know that it was recorded by BBC Radio 3 and is currently available on Listen Again.
