Dame Sarah Connolly (as she became in last year’s Birthday Honours) is a universally admired performer in the world’s opera houses, from Glyndebourne and Covent Garden to La Scala and the Met, as well as in its concert halls: her sensational appearance at the Last Night of the 2009 BBC Proms is still fondly remembered. For this recital, with the expert accompanist Joseph Middleton, she has chosen a Mozart aria from one of her acclaimed stage roles, Sesto in La Clemenza di Tito. The programme also includes jewels of the song repertoire from the Austro-German, French and English traditions: Schubert’s settings of Ellen’s three songs from Sir Walter Scott’s The Lady of the Lake, the last of them the familiar “Ave Maria”; Ravel’s sensuous depictions of the East and Debussy’s erotic evocations of classical antiquity; and characteristic songs by Ivor Gurney and John Ireland.
